5 Books – August 2015

My reading has been taking a major hit. I haven’t been able to get my mojo back. No matter how hard I try and I have stopped trying. I drift along, running my fingers through the pages and checking out the latest releases on my e-library wondering when I will feel that urge to read – all day and all night again.

1) Hector and the Search for Happiness by Lelord Francois

I have been reading quite a few “happiness” related books and this is just another one. I loved the ease with which this book flowed. I couldn’t help falling in love with Hector and his explorations. His journey and his notebook leave a mark. It is just the perfect light read to keep one entertained.

2) The Twenty-One Balloons by William Pène du Bois

I actually picked this book hoping kuttyma might enjoy it. I later realised it was a not suitable for her age and ended up reading it. What an absolute delight it turned out to be. Professor Sherman decides he needs me time and takes off on a hot-air balloon. What happens to Prof.Sherman is the crux of the story. It is a wild ride.

3) Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan

Finding love and losing love is common in YA fiction but what makes this book amazing is the crazy wonderful world Levithan creates. It is not your usual high school. In an ideal world, we would see more such utopian places for people to embrace themselves first before embracing others.

4) A Wedding in Haiti by Julia Alvarez

Books offer a way to escape to lands I may never go to. This book does just that. Julia Alvarez takes the reader for a trip through two countries. Beautiful, same yet different. Julia’s friendship with Piti takes her to Haiti for Piti’s wedding. It is stark, revealing and real.

5) Lost and Found by Brooke Davis

Millie Bird is abandoned by her mother. She teams with 82 year old Agatha Pantha and Karl the touch typist go searching for her mother. The journey is inward as much as it is outward. It is quirky and different and fun.

5 books is a monthly series featuring some of the books I read and loved recently. For more book updates and to check my current reading list, head to my Goodreads account
