All I do for her

I met up with a friend for tea. It was the usual fun session – gossip, celebrity crushes, diet flops, kitchen disasters, friendship fails and family woes. But then amongst all this talk, our conversations kept drifting back to kids. You see we both are mothers and you put two mothers together anywhere, the conversations will drift towards teething troubles, diaper rashes and such. I have had many such conversations during coffee breaks in board rooms and had my eyes mist with tears as I watched the bustle of downtown. It is a way of life. All I want is the best for my daughter and to ensure that she gets it, I bend backwards (well I try to).

When I was pregnant (and since then) I have spend hours on the internet researching products. I have read everything from scientific papers to parent recommendations. I have signed on to many parent email groups (and unsubscribed them in the same speed. Do you know how much drama happens when a bunch of rather opinionated and opinion seeking moms get together?)

I still do frequent a few forums and email groups when I seek answers for the betterment of my daughter. The latest question I sought answers was “what is the right age to introduce a e-reader to a kid?” That is just the latest. I do vividly remember the first question I asked the internet gods – “what is the best diaper for newborns?” I must have spent hours reading about diapers (and the kinds of poop that they see). I relied a lot on the internet along with its untruths were few trustworthy nuggets.

But over the years I have realised that when it comes to making selections for my daughter, parents who do their research know the best. They read the latest scientific research and figure out products that incorporate those. They write reviews on blogs/e-commerce sites and forums. They listen to other parents rants and whines and praises. Above all, they are quick and eager to share their knowledge.

I love such parents. I do my research on the internet and then call a few of the parents whose decisions I take – with a grain of salt. I think I will continue to do it forever. After all, she may outgrow my lap but she will always be my baby. Sigh! They do grow fast don’t they?
