Take a Picture of Me

Take a Picture of Me, James VanDerZee! #Readyourworld MCBD 2018

Take a Picture of Me, James VanDerZee! written by Andrea J.Loney  and illustrated by Keith Mallett is my first read for this year’s Multicultural Children’s Book Day.

The book is published by Lee & Low Books.

Take a Picture of Me, James VanDerZee

This book is the story of a very determined man – James VanDerZee. As a child he fell in love with photography and earned money to buy his first camera.

I love the illustrations in this book. They are so life-like. It transports you back to a different era and world. The writing is simple but very powerful. Lines like the one below make readers pause for a minute and think.

the children learned about music and art, and kindness too

The book is also a story of evolution and technology. From the huge contraptions and dark room era, we are now in a digital where photos and videos can be altered and reworked with little effort.

The book resonated well with my 8-year old who is currently dabbling with digital photography. It is quite hard for her to imagine a world of old-fashioned photography. I am so glad this book will be a part of our collection to remind her that the world was very different not too long ago.

I received a free copy of the book for the purposes of this review.
