Take a Picture of Me, James VanDerZee! written by Andrea J.Loney\u00a0 and illustrated by Keith Mallett is my first read for this year’s Multicultural Children’s Book Day.<\/p>\n

Take a Picture of Me, James VanDerZee<\/h2>\n

This book is the story of a very determined man – James VanDerZee. As a child he fell in love with photography and earned money to buy his first camera.<\/p>\n

I love the illustrations in this book. They are so life-like. It transports you back to a different era and world. The writing is simple but very powerful. Lines like the one below make readers pause for a minute and think.<\/p>\n

the children learned about music and art, and kindness too<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The book is also a story of evolution and technology. From the huge contraptions and dark room era, we are now in a digital where photos and videos can be altered and reworked with little effort.<\/p>\n

The book resonated well with my 8-year old who is currently dabbling with digital photography. It is quite hard for her to imagine a world of old-fashioned photography. I am so glad this book will be a part of our collection to remind her that the world was very different not too long ago.<\/p>\n
