Valentine’s Day gets a bad rap and rightfully so. I find it cheesy and over-the-top. I can’t handle the red and pink hearts that sprout up and every corner. But then that is just be. Maybe I am a Valentine’s Scourge. The only part of Valentine’s Day I enjoy is the day-after Valentine’s Day sale. You get stuffed toys and chocolates at half off!<\/p>\n
Every year, my 7-year old gets excited over Valentine’s Day. She plans her outfit (it has to have hearts) and gifts for her friends. She tends to go overboard and plan gifts in advance. Much in advance. This year, she painted red and pink glitter hearts on muslin bags for her friends.<\/p>\n

Our children need to know we love them, Valentine’s Day and every day. It is very easy to forget to show the unconditional, deep-seated love for our children in the realities of every day. Between chores and routines and the unexpected, we hide our love. But children need constant reassurance and telling.<\/p>\n
Here are simple every day ways to show your children.<\/p>\n
I love this. I tuck in small notes with a message in my daughter’s lunch bag or school bag to discover during the day. It is always fun for her discover the note at school and read it. These days she prefers me to write “punny” jokes for her. The sillier the better.<\/p>\n
The magic language of love is always hugs and cuddles. You always come back energised after\u00a0a hug and cuddle session. I dropped my rather cranky daughter in school earlier today. “Can we have a cuddle time as soon as I come home?”, she asked before I said bye to her in front of the school.<\/p>\n
The simplest thing, you can give a child is your undivided attention. It is not the easiest thing in today’s world. But take a few minutes to put away your devices and listen to your child. Really listen. Often, I find myself barely listening to my daughter. I get distracted by my phone. I just remind myself to give my daughter the time and attention she deserves.<\/p>\n
Mother-daughter dates are definitely a winner. Our favourite date ideas include\u00a0\u00a0Waffle Wednesdays at our favorite ice-cream parlour, hit the craft shops, work on a craft project, read and discuss a book. It is also a way to give your child\u00a0undivided attention. These activities are fun and entertaining too.<\/p>\n
Nothing can make up for the words. Tell it. Share your love with your children. A simple “I love you” can change and brighten a child’s day. Hearing it back will definitely make your day better. Teach them early on to tell their love and to share it. I think it is one of most important lesson we can teach our children.<\/p>\n
