5 Books – March 2014

I have been on a reading spree lately. I have discovered some lovely books and been making quite a dent on my to-read list. I think I also have finally made reading on my phone Kindle app a habit. I don’t find it too difficult these days. It has been quite an experience.

1) Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver

I admit I have dreamed about writing a book. I wish I had written this book. This book brings together climate change and fiction. It marries them together and they exist in perfect harmony. It is not science fiction. It is not a non-fiction work parading as fiction. It has strong characters, beautiful locales and a strong story. I could write a review but that defeats the purpose. Do yourself a favor – pick a copy of this book and fall in love with Monarch butterflies.

2) Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri

I am not a big short stories fan. I am not a big fan of immigrant tales or Ms.Lahiri. But the Interpreter of Maladies changed me. It is a wonderful collection of beautifully written stories that resonate with any reader. “When Mr. Pirzada Came To Dine” was probably my favorite from the collection though it is very hard to pick a favorite. I also loved “The Third and Final Continent”.

3) Lunch in Paris: A Love Story, with Recipes by Elizabeth Bard

I added this book to my to-reads list a few years back. I never got to read till I found it in the library recently. I am glad I waited so long before I read it as I was able to appreciate the expat views much better. Love makes one do strange things like moving to Paris. The author moves to Paris, discovers herself through food. It is quite an amusing and interesting read. It sort of makes me want to move to Paris. The book also had a good collection of recipes. I wanted to copy a few of them to try but never got around doing it. I might just have to borrow the book again.

4) The Weird Sisters by Elanor Brown

This was another book that had been on my to-reads list for years. I don’t remember who recommended it to me or why but it was nice read. 3 sisters each with their own quirks and baggage try to figure out their place in this world. The story would have been run off the mill if it had not been for the Shakespeare. This book would make a great vacation read

5) Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mom by Amy Chua

I am sure everyone has heard of this book. The book that caused waves. I had to read it to understand and see the world through Chua’s eyes. I have to admit I am in awe of this mother – she managed to balance work along with being a tiger mom. I seriously doubt I have that kind of drive within me to be a tiger mom. Obviously like any parenting book, you end up picking up some tips along the way. I would recommend this book to every mother.
