Be the tourist

December/January brought a lot of holidays and having just moved to Singapore we decided to stay in Singapore and explore the city. It raised a lot of eyebrows. Most people thought we would have more fun if we headed to Malaysia or Thailand or some other exotic destination. As tempting as the idea was we decided to stay put. Just to give ourselves a sense of stability and we were genuinely interested in figuring out what Singapore offered.

One of my biggest regrets was that I could not explore Houston completely before I moved. I started a bit too late on my Houston bucket list and I had no plans to repeat the mistake again. I started a Singapore bucket list the first month in the country. It is long and I keep adding things to it. I will probably repeat few of them (we have already been to the zoo thrice)

Every city has something to offer – trips to exotic destinations are fun but it would be sad not to explore what your city offers. A good place to start is by picking up a travel guide for your city/state. You will be surprised what is being offered. The next place is the internet. I have a Google Document with every place I read about typed out there. When I start planning my weekend, I take a look there and find something I can fit in between my grocery run and catching up on zzzs.

It is also a great opportunity for us to see the city – sometimes I find myself too busy engrossed in my Ipad or computer all through the week. I just want to play tourist in the city I live in. I am doing it. I have done many of the touristy offerings Singapore offers – the zoo, night safari, the boat ride to see the Merlion, the flyer, a walk through Chinatown and I have more places to enjoy.

Take a day off – hit the top touristy spot in your city – you will come out surprised
