MCBD Book Review 2020

Book Review – A Map into the World – MCBD 2020

MCBD is one of my favorite reasons to blog. I love the community and connections. I love the books and doors it opens for children (and adults alike).

This year I had a chance to be matched up with 2 great publishers who bring out great multicultural reads for kids. The first book I read was A Map into the World by Koa Kalia Yang and illustrated by Seo Kim. The book was published by Carolrhoda Books.

This picture book reminded me why I insist on reading picture books with my now 10-year old blogger daughter. Picture books are timeless. They pack a punch in a few pages.

In A Map into the World, the author and illustrator take the reader on a journey through the seasons as the life of the young protagonist, Paj Ntaub changes. She welcomes her new brothers, understands death and finds a purpose. It is a sweet book reminding me and the readers that the world is vast and wide. There is so much we miss and often we need the eyes of the innocent young ones to point them our way.

Ideal read for kids aged 5+.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2020 (1/31/20) is in its 7th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those book into the hands of young readers and educators.

Seven years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues.
