Book Review: India Unplugged

As an expat in Australia, I go through moments and emotions that are change drastically. There are those moments of falling in love and howling in despair, moments that qualify as disasters and moments that are roaring successes. It is journey like no other and at times I wonder how an expat in India would feel like.

It is extremely hard for me to be objective about the place I call home. I have a hard time imagining the daily existence for an expat in India. I admit it was curiosity to see the land through the eyes of an expat that made me agree to review this book. Aurelia writes about her experiences in India (Bangalore specifically). She describes the book as “Part travelogue, part memoir, and part advice for India travelers”.

The book is crisp, short and well-written. It is simple and precise. It is not the usual expat party scene and cribbing about maids and erratic weather and cultural differences. It is a true account of what happens in everyday India.

On the other side, the book seemed more like a personal diary one would keep. It was very superficial – I wish the author had taken time to explain her feelings and emotions better. It would have been better if a little more narration and background was included. As such the book felt very disconnected with random topics popping up. Very like a personal record.

I would definitely recommend this book to an Indian-expat-to-be. Pick a copy and enjoy the land

I received a free copy of the book for review. All opinions are mine
