C: Clubs

There were two clubs in the BHEL Trichy campus that I frequented – KC and CC. I know the club hosted a myriad of events and activities but my major attraction was the library. I read my first Agatha Christie, Sidney Sheldon, James Hardy Chase, Mills & Boon and abridged version of classics here. The libraries were rudimentary, the books tattered and taped together but it was heaven.

The KC library remains almost untouched by time.

Here’s a haiku in memory of KC and CC,

Ashoka leaves sway

Watching readers, players parade through

Loud birds chirp away

Carom, Chess, Billiards

Basketball, Bridge,Table Tennis

Sportsmanship lessons

I still remember

Pungent chlorine corroding

Sparkling blue waters

Moon plays peek-a-boo

Stars sang, danced and cried on earth

Movie nights at the club

Hot air blows, chairs groan

Under the fan we sit gossip

Summer holidays

The sole AC hums

Magazines flipped in earnest

Unaware of world

The Reading Room at KC – the only air-conditioned room at the club
